Absorbia ("we", "our", or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy and ensuring transparency in how we collect, use, and safeguard your personal information. This Privacy Policy explains our data practices when you use the Absorbia mobile application ("App") and related services.
By using the App, you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agree to be bound by this Privacy Policy and our Terms of Service.
1. Information We Collect
1.1 Information You Provide Directly
When you create an account or use the App, we collect:
- Account Information: Email address, password (encrypted), full name, and profile details
- Profile Data: Profile picture/avatar, age, gender, preferred language, and selected topics of interest
- Authentication Data: When you use Sign in with Apple or Google Sign-In, we receive limited profile information (name, email, and authentication tokens) from these providers
- User-Generated Content: Questions you ask via the ChatGPT Q&A feature, feedback, and support communications
1.2 Usage and Learning Data
We automatically collect data about your interactions with the App:
- Learning Activity: Questions viewed, answers selected, reading time per card, session duration, topics explored, and learning streaks
- Progress Metrics: Experience points (XP), current level (Mercury through Neptune), tier progression, daily streak count, and learning milestones
- Engagement Data: Cards saved to library, content downloads, leaderboard ranking, profile views by other users
- Social Features: Friend invitations sent, user interactions, and public profile visits
- App Sessions: Login/logout times, session frequency, feature usage patterns
1.3 Technical and Device Information
- Device Data: Device model, operating system (iOS/Android), OS version, unique device identifiers, mobile network information
- App Performance: Crash logs, error reports, app version, performance metrics, response times
- Network Data: IP address (anonymized where possible), connection type, general location data (city/country level only)
1.4 Analytics and Tracking Data
We use analytics services to understand app usage:
- Mixpanel Analytics: User behavior patterns, feature engagement, retention metrics, and aggregated usage statistics
- Event Tracking: Button clicks, screen views, feature interactions, onboarding completion rates
1.5 Payment and Subscription Data
When you purchase a subscription:
- Subscription Information: Subscription tier, purchase date, renewal date, subscription status (active/expired/cancelled)
- Transaction Data: We do NOT collect or store credit card information. All payments are processed by Apple App Store or Google Play Store
- Receipt Data: Transaction IDs and receipt tokens provided by app stores for verification purposes

4. Legal Basis for Processing (GDPR)
If you are located in the European Economic Area (EEA), UK, or Switzerland, we process your personal data based on the following legal grounds:
- Contractual Necessity: Processing is necessary to provide the App services you've requested (e.g., account creation, content delivery, subscription management)
- Consent: You have given explicit consent for specific processing activities (e.g., marketing emails, optional analytics, profile visibility)
- Legitimate Interests: Processing is necessary for our legitimate business interests (e.g., improving the App, preventing fraud, ensuring security) provided these interests do not override your fundamental rights
- Legal Obligations: Processing is required to comply with applicable laws and regulations
5. Data Storage, Security, and Retention
5.1 Data Storage Locations
- Local Device Storage: Some data is stored locally on your device using encrypted storage (iOS Keychain, Android Keystore, SQLite databases, Isar NoSQL, SharedPreferences)
- Cloud Storage: User data, content, and backups are stored on secure cloud servers provided by Firebase and our backend infrastructure
- Geographic Location: Our primary data centers are located in the European Economic Area (EEA). Some third-party services (e.g., Mixpanel, OpenAI) may process data in the United States or other jurisdictions
5.2 Security Measures
We implement industry-standard security practices to protect your data:
- Encryption: Data transmission uses TLS 1.3 encryption; passwords are hashed and never stored in plain text
- Authentication: OAuth 2.0 with PKCE (Proof Key for Code Exchange) for secure third-party login
- Access Controls: Strict access controls limit who can access personal data within our organization
- Secure Credential Storage: Authentication tokens stored in iOS Keychain and Android Keystore
- Regular Audits: We conduct security assessments and monitor for vulnerabilities
Note: While we take reasonable measures to protect your data, no method of electronic storage or transmission is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security.
5.3 Data Retention
- Active Accounts: We retain your data for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide services
- Inactive Accounts: If you don't use the App for 3 years, we may delete or anonymize your data
- Deleted Accounts: When you request account deletion, we will delete or anonymize your personal data within 30 days, except where we must retain data for legal, regulatory, or security purposes
- Analytics Data: Aggregated, anonymized analytics may be retained indefinitely for statistical purposes
- Legal Holds: We may retain data longer if required by law or legal process
6. International Data Transfers
If you access the App from outside the EEA, your data may be transferred to and processed in the EEA or other countries where we or our service providers operate. These countries may have different data protection laws than your home country.
For EEA users whose data is transferred to countries without adequate data protection laws (such as the United States), we implement appropriate safeguards including:

7. Your Privacy Rights

You may also manage some settings directly in the App:
- Edit profile information in Account Settings
- Control profile visibility and leaderboard participation
- Manage email notification preferences
- Delete your account from the App settings
8. Children's Privacy
Absorbia is designed for users aged 13 and older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 years of age.
- If you are under 13, you may not use the App or provide any personal information
- If you are between 13 and 18, you must have permission from a parent or legal guardian before using the App
- If we discover that we have collected data from a child under 13, we will delete that information promptly
- Parents or guardians who believe their child has provided information to us should contact us at privacy@absorbia.com
9. Cookies and Tracking Technologies
The App uses local storage technologies similar to cookies:
- Essential Storage: Required for app functionality (login state, user preferences, offline content)
- Analytics Storage: Used by Mixpanel to track usage patterns (you can opt out in Settings)
- Session Storage: Temporary data stored during your app session
You can control some tracking by:
- Adjusting privacy settings in the App
- Using device-level privacy controls (iOS: Limit Ad Tracking; Android: Opt out of Ads Personalization)
- Contacting us to opt out of analytics tracking
10. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, technologies, legal requirements, or other factors.
- Notification: We will notify you of material changes via in-app notification, email, or prominent notice on our website
- Effective Date: Changes become effective on the date specified in the updated policy
- Your Options: Continued use of the App after changes indicates acceptance. If you disagree with changes, you may delete your account

Welcome to Absorbia! These Terms of Service ("Terms") constitute a legally binding agreement between you and Absorbia governing your access to and use of the Absorbia mobile application ("App") and all related services, features, and content.
BY CREATING AN ACCOUNT, ACCESSING, OR USING THE APP, YOU ACKNOWLEDGE THAT YOU HAVE READ, UNDERSTOOD, AND AGREE TO BE BOUND BY THESE TERMS AND OUR PRIVACY POLICY. IF YOU DO NOT AGREE, YOU MAY NOT USE THE APP.
1. Acceptance of Terms
By accessing or using Absorbia, you agree to:
- Comply with these Terms of Service
- Abide by our Privacy Policy (incorporated by reference)
- Follow all applicable local, state, national, and international laws and regulations
- Accept any additional terms that apply to specific features or services
We reserve the right to modify these Terms at any time. Material changes will be communicated via in-app notification, email, or website notice. Your continued use after such modifications constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.
2. Eligibility and Account Requirements
2.1 Age Requirements
- Minimum Age: You must be at least 13 years old to use Absorbia
- Minors (13-17): If you are under 18, you represent that you have obtained permission from your parent or legal guardian to use the App, and your parent/guardian agrees to be bound by these Terms on your behalf
- Parental Consent: Parents/guardians are responsible for monitoring and supervising their child's use of the App
2.2 Account Creation and Security
To use certain features, you must create an account by providing:
- Valid email address
- Secure password (or authenticate via Apple Sign-In or Google Sign-In)
- Accurate profile information (name, age, language preferences)
You are responsible for:
- Maintaining the confidentiality of your login credentials
- All activities that occur under your account
- Notifying us immediately of any unauthorized access or security breach
- Ensuring your account information remains accurate and up-to-date
Account Restrictions:
- One person may create only one account
- You may not share, sell, or transfer your account to another person
- You may not use another person's account without permission
- Accounts are non-transferable
3. Permitted Use and Restrictions
3.1 Permitted Uses
You may use Absorbia to:
- Access educational content and learning materials
- Track your learning progress and earn achievements
- Participate in leaderboards and social features
- Save content to your personal library for offline access
- Use the ChatGPT Q&A feature to ask educational questions
- Customize your learning experience based on topics of interest
3.2 Prohibited Activities
You agree NOT to:
Account Abuse:
- Create fake accounts or use automated bots to create accounts
- Impersonate any person or entity, or falsely represent your affiliation
- Share your account credentials with others or allow others to access your account
Content Misuse:
- Copy, reproduce, distribute, publish, or create derivative works from App content without written permission
- Download or extract content using automated tools (scraping, crawling, etc.)
- Remove copyright notices, trademarks, or proprietary markings from any content
- Use content for commercial purposes without authorization
System Interference:
- Attempt to gain unauthorized access to the App, servers, or related systems
- Interfere with or disrupt the App's functionality, servers, or networks
- Introduce viruses, malware, or any malicious code
- Reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble, or hack the App
- Circumvent security features or access controls
- Exploit bugs or vulnerabilities for unauthorized purposes (please report these to us)
Abuse of Features:
- Manipulate leaderboards through cheating, automation, or exploitation
- Create multiple accounts to gain unfair advantages
- Abuse the ChatGPT Q&A feature for purposes unrelated to learning
- Use the App in any way that violates applicable laws or regulations
Harmful Conduct:
- Harass, threaten, or harm other users
- Post or transmit offensive, defamatory, or inappropriate content
- Engage in fraudulent activities or misrepresentation
- Violate the privacy or rights of other users
4. Intellectual Property Rights
4.1 Our Intellectual Property
All content, features, and functionality of the App, including but not limited to:
- Text, graphics, images, logos, and visual designs
- Educational content (questions, answers, explanations)
- Software code, algorithms, and technical infrastructure
- Trademarks, service marks, and trade names ("Absorbia" name and logo)
- User interface designs and app architecture
...are owned by Absorbia or our licensors and are protected by copyright, trademark, patent, trade secret, and other intellectual property laws.
4.2 Limited License
We grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to:
- Access and use the App for personal, non-commercial, educational purposes
- Download and store content for offline use within the App
This license does NOT permit you to:
- Reproduce, distribute, or publicly display App content outside the App
- Modify, adapt, or create derivative works
- Use content for commercial purposes
- Sublicense, sell, or transfer your rights to others
4.3 User-Generated Content
When you submit questions via ChatGPT Q&A, feedback, or other content to the App:
- You retain ownership of your content
- You grant us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to use, store, and process your content to provide and improve the service
- You represent that you have the right to submit the content and it does not violate any laws or third-party rights
- We may use aggregated, anonymized data derived from user content for analytics and improvement purposes
4.4 Feedback and Suggestions
If you provide feedback, suggestions, or ideas about the App, you grant us the right to use them without compensation or attribution.
5. Subscriptions and Payments
5.1 Subscription Plans
Absorbia offers both free and premium subscription tiers:
- Free Tier: Access to core learning features with limitations (e.g., 10 free ChatGPT queries per day)
- Premium Subscription: Unlimited access to all features, including unlimited ChatGPT queries, advanced analytics, and exclusive content
5.2 Payment Processing
- All payments are processed through Apple App Store (for iOS users) or Google Play Store (for Android users)
- You agree to the payment terms and policies of these platforms
- Absorbia does NOT collect or store your payment information (credit card numbers, billing addresses, etc.)
5.3 Subscription Terms
- Billing Cycle: Subscriptions are billed on a recurring basis (monthly or annually, depending on your selection)
- Auto-Renewal: Subscriptions automatically renew unless you cancel before the renewal date
- Price Changes: We reserve the right to modify subscription prices. You will be notified of price changes at least 30 days in advance
- No Pro-Rata Refunds: If you cancel mid-cycle, you retain access until the end of the current billing period but will not receive a refund for unused time
5.4 Cancellation
You may cancel your subscription at any time:
- iOS: Manage subscriptions in iPhone Settings > [Your Name] > Subscriptions
- Android: Manage subscriptions in Google Play Store > Subscriptions
- Cancellations take effect at the end of the current billing cycle
- No partial refunds are provided for early cancellation
5.5 Free Trials and Promotional Offers
- We may offer free trials or promotional pricing at our discretion
- Eligibility for trials may be limited (e.g., new users only, one per account)
- Trials automatically convert to paid subscriptions unless cancelled before the trial ends
- We reserve the right to modify or discontinue promotional offers at any time
5.6 Refund Policy
- Refund requests are subject to Apple and Google's refund policies
- Generally, purchases are non-refundable unless required by law
- For exceptional circumstances, contact support@absorbia.com to discuss refund options
- If we grant a refund, your premium access will be terminated immediately
6. Leaderboards and Social Features
6.1 Leaderboard Participation
- Leaderboards rank users based on experience points (XP) earned through learning activities
- The leaderboard displays the top 200 users globally
- For users outside the top 200, rankings show your position relative to users within ±10 ranks of you (obfuscated for privacy)
- Participation in leaderboards is optional and can be disabled in Settings
6.2 Profile Visibility
- Your profile (name, avatar, level, XP, rank) may be visible to other users if leaderboard participation is enabled
- Other users can view your public profile, but cannot see your learning history or personal information
- You can control profile visibility in Settings
6.3 Fair Play Policy
To maintain fairness on leaderboards:
- Do not use automated tools, bots, or scripts to artificially inflate XP
- Do not create multiple accounts to manipulate rankings
- Do not collude with other users to gain unfair advantages
- Violations will result in leaderboard disqualification, XP reset, or account suspension
7. ChatGPT Q&A Feature
7.1 Feature Description
- The App includes an AI-powered Q&A feature powered by OpenAI's ChatGPT
- Free users receive 10 queries per day; premium subscribers have unlimited queries
- Queries reset daily at midnight UTC
7.2 Acceptable Use
The ChatGPT feature is intended for educational purposes. You may NOT:
- Use it for purposes unrelated to learning (e.g., writing essays to submit as your own work, generating spam, etc.)
- Submit harmful, abusive, or illegal queries
- Attempt to "jailbreak" or manipulate the AI to bypass safety guidelines
- Use it to generate content that violates intellectual property rights
7.3 Accuracy and Disclaimers
- AI-generated responses may contain errors, inaccuracies, or outdated information
- Responses are for informational purposes only and should not be considered professional advice
- We are not responsible for actions taken based on AI-generated content
- Verify important information from authoritative sources
7.4 Data Processing
- Your questions are sent to OpenAI for processing (see our Privacy Policy for details)
- OpenAI's terms and privacy policy apply to ChatGPT usage
- We do not use your ChatGPT queries to train AI models unless you explicitly consent
8. Content Accuracy and Educational Disclaimers
8.1 Content Accuracy
While we strive to provide accurate, high-quality educational content:
- Content is for general educational and informational purposes only
- We do not guarantee the completeness, accuracy, reliability, or currentness of any content
- Content may contain errors, omissions, or outdated information
- We periodically update content, but cannot guarantee all information is current
8.2 Not Professional Advice
Absorbia does NOT provide:
- Medical, legal, financial, or other professional advice
- Accredited educational credentials or certifications
- A substitute for formal education or professional training
Always consult qualified professionals for advice specific to your circumstances.
8.3 Third-Party Content
- Some content may be sourced from or link to third-party sources
- We are not responsible for the accuracy or availability of third-party content
- Links to external websites do not constitute endorsement
9. User Conduct and Community Guidelines
9.1 Respectful Behavior
When interacting with the App and other users, you must:
- Treat other users with respect and courtesy
- Refrain from harassment, bullying, or hate speech
- Avoid sharing offensive, discriminatory, or inappropriate content
- Respect others' privacy and personal information
9.2 Reporting Violations
- If you encounter inappropriate behavior or content, report it to support@absorbia.com
- Include details such as username, date/time, and description of the violation
- We will investigate reports and take appropriate action
10. Account Suspension and Termination
10.1 Our Right to Suspend or Terminate
We reserve the right to suspend or terminate your account, with or without notice, if:
- You violate these Terms of Service or our policies
- You engage in fraudulent or illegal activities
- Your account has been inactive for an extended period (typically 3+ years)
- We are required to do so by law or legal process
- Continued operation of your account poses a security risk
10.2 Effects of Termination
Upon termination:
- Your access to the App will be immediately revoked
- You will lose access to saved content, progress data, and premium features
- Unused subscription time is not refundable (unless required by law)
- We may delete your account data in accordance with our Privacy Policy
- Provisions of these Terms that by their nature should survive (e.g., intellectual property, disclaimers, indemnification) will remain in effect
10.3 Your Right to Terminate
- You may delete your account at any time through the App settings
- Account deletion is permanent and cannot be undone
- Downloaded content will be removed from your device
- Cancel subscriptions separately through Apple or Google to stop future billing
11. Disclaimers and Limitations of Liability
11.1 "AS IS" and "AS AVAILABLE" Basis
THE APP IS PROVIDED ON AN "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" BASIS WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO:
- Warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement
- Warranties that the App will be uninterrupted, error-free, or secure
- Warranties regarding the accuracy, reliability, or completeness of content
- Warranties that defects will be corrected
11.2 Limitation of Liability
TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, ABSORBIA AND ITS AFFILIATES, OFFICERS, DIRECTORS, EMPLOYEES, AND AGENTS WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR:
- Indirect, incidental, consequential, punitive, or special damages
- Loss of profits, revenue, data, or use
- Business interruption or lost opportunities
- Damages arising from unauthorized access to your account
- Damages resulting from reliance on App content
IN NO EVENT WILL OUR TOTAL LIABILITY EXCEED THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US IN THE 12 MONTHS PRECEDING THE CLAIM (OR €100 IF YOU HAVE NOT MADE ANY PAYMENTS).
11.3 Jurisdictional Limitations
Some jurisdictions do not allow exclusion of implied warranties or limitation of liability for incidental or consequential damages. In such jurisdictions, our liability will be limited to the maximum extent permitted by law.
12. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless Absorbia and its affiliates, officers, directors, employees, agents, and partners from and against any claims, liabilities, damages, losses, costs, or expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising from or related to:
- Your use or misuse of the App
- Your violation of these Terms
- Your violation of any rights of another person or entity
- Your violation of any applicable laws or regulations
- Content you submit to the App
13. Dispute Resolution
13.1 Informal Resolution
Before filing a claim, you agree to contact us at legal@absorbia.com to attempt to resolve the dispute informally. We commit to working with you in good faith to reach a resolution.
13.2 Governing Law
These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the Netherlands, without regard to conflict of law principles.
13.3 Jurisdiction and Venue
Any disputes arising from these Terms or your use of the App will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts located in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
13.4 Arbitration (If Applicable)
Depending on your jurisdiction, we may require binding arbitration for certain disputes. Specific arbitration terms will be provided as required by law in your region.
13.5 Class Action Waiver
To the extent permitted by law, you agree that any dispute will be resolved on an individual basis and NOT as part of a class action, consolidated action, or representative action.
14. General Provisions
14.1 Entire Agreement

We are not liable for delays or failures in performance due to circumstances beyond our reasonable control (e.g., natural disasters, war, pandemics, internet outages).

15.1 Offline Content
- You may download content for offline use within the App only
- Downloaded content remains subject to all intellectual property restrictions
- Offline content may become unavailable if your subscription lapses or content is removed from the service
- Do not extract, redistribute, or use offline content outside the App
15.2 Streaks and Gamification
- Daily streaks require activity within a 24-hour window (+5 minute grace period)
- Streaks may be lost due to inactivity, and we are not obligated to restore lost streaks
- XP and levels are for motivational purposes only and have no real-world value
- We reserve the right to adjust XP calculations, levels, or streak rules at any time
15.3 User Invitations and Referrals
- If we offer a referral program, specific terms will apply
- Do not spam or send unsolicited invitations
- Fraudulent referral activity may result in account suspension
